Part of the preform technology is the special CMPreform developed binder. Pentair is a long time producer of preforms for its filterhousings. However the used binder is a thermoset that is environmentally unfriendly and costly. The thermoset binder in itself is not very expensive, it is more that to control emissions, there is the need to filter the outgoing air. Further, since the binder is a thermoset the filter installation needs to be cleaned weekly at considerable costs. By applying the CMPreform thermoplastic binder Pentair rids itself from the need to continually control the emissions. Cleaning costs will also decrease. The  binder is a multi compound resin which will harden. Even in the air treatment system.

For Pentair changing from a resin to a fibre is relatively easy. They just change one from the other.

The existing preform process at Pentair uses a spraygun for chopped strands and resin binder. This combination is sprayed into a negative mould, which revolves around its axis. The mould sits in what in effect is an oven. After spraying the oven is closed and the resin is left to harden.

After some minutes the preform is taken out.

The proces with the thermoplastic binder is the same, save that the spraygun now sprays a mixture of fibreglass and binder.
